It opened in the spring of 1911.

The Rodmay was built by Andrew McKinney. It was the Townsite's first hotel and in those days it was called the Powell River Hotel.

The original hotel consisted of 31 rooms but it was added on to in the 1920s and 1930s.

The hotel was purchased by Rod and May MacIntyre in 1917 and renamed The Rodmay. It was taken over by their son Batt in 1928, a year before Rod's death. Batt managed and expanded the hotel business until he sold it to Al Mantoani and a group of investors in 1957. The hotel continued to operate over the years but was vacant for several years prior to 2005 when Joan Campbell and investors took it over in 2005.

The new owners have been renovating and remodeling the hotel since taking it over in 2005. Today, the hotel offers a full service facility with rooms, suites, meeting areas and businesses including the Heritage Liquor Store, McKinney's Pub, and Accurate Location Surveys.

Art shows, poetry readings, social functions and workshops have been held at the hotel.

The Rodmay Heritage Hotel retains its heritage ambiance and architecture including a grand lobby and double staircase.
