Celebrating our men

With Father's Day just around the corner it seemed like a good time to pay tribute to some of the men in our community by highlighting the interesting things they do.

Powell River never ceases to amaze me. It seems like the most interesting people end up living here. They often come for a visit, fall in love with the community and then move here!

Such was the case with Frank Clayton. This national karate champion was just passing through and ended up staying. He was planning to retire but instead opened a school and now spends his days teaching and mentoring youngsters and adults.

The bit about passing through can't be said when it comes to Dan Parsons. Dan was born in Powell River and his family has lived on Cranberry Lake for many years. He grew up here but his many interests often take him away from Powell River. About the only thing he passes through these days is the lower Sunshine Coast on his way to a stock car race or a model train event!

Both Dan and Frank are fathers. On June 20, children will honour their fathers for many things but possibly the most important is for just being there and for loving them.

June means it's time to get out in the garden and our horticultural expert Jonathan van Wiltenburg is talking about everyone's favourites this month, mouth-watering strawberries! Speaking of local food, if you grow or produce local food you'll want to talk to associate publisher Sean Percy about a new publication we're putting out called A Taste of Powell River. It's all about local food and sustainability.

Humour columnist George Campbell never fails to make me smile and this month's column is no exception. Turn to page 26, sit back and read all about the Great Frog Race at Henderson Bay and see what happens! Campbell's writing is so down to earth that you'll feel like you were there watching everything unfold.

Joanie Winegarden has been honing her photography skills recently and has provided us with many lovely wildflower photos for this month's Explore Powell River page.

If you're looking for Blast from the Past, don't despair. That regular feature is on vacation this month in order to get ready for July's special issue that looks at the Townsite's 100th anniversary.

And last, but certainly not least, be sure to read Barb Rees's story on page 19 about a hero by the name of Rick Gration. We're sure you will be touched by his courage and tenacity.

Happy reading!
