About Us
Isabelle Southcott
publisher & editor
When the first issue of Powell River Living Magazine rolled off the press in February 2006, Isabelle Southcott's dream of starting her own magazine came true!
After working as a journalist for daily newspapers for several years in Nova Scotia, Isabelle decided to check out the west coast and ended up working for The Powell River News and later for The Peak. Since 1993, she has won 16 national and provincial journalism awards. She keeps busy as Powell River Living Magazine's publisher, managing editor and mother to two young boys.
Isabelle wanted to create a publication that focused on what is positive about the wonderful community she calls home. "I was tired of sensationalism and the 'if it bleeds it leads' mentality," she said. "I wanted to create a publication that celebrated human successes."
"It is most rewarding to hear and see the response to Powell River Living from advertisers and readers. Their enthusiasm makes it all that much more worthwhile."
In November of 2006, Powell River Living was named the New Business of the Year at the Horizon Business Awards, and a Small Business of the Year runner-up in 2008; in 2009 the magazine was runner-up for the Home Based Business of the Year. Powell River Living Magazine is a finalist for best new magazine of the year in western Canada with the Western Magazine Awards. Powell River Living Magazine is a member of the BC Association of Magazine Publishers.
